Sinai Center for Thrombosis Research

The Sinai Center for Thrombosis Research was founded in 1998.  The center's primary focus is translational research related to thrombosis in patients undergoing interventional cardiovascular procedures.

The center has fully equipped, state-of-the art laboratories where the most intricate basic investigations of platelet physiology and coagulation can be conducted.  In the last two years the center's investigators have published over 24 peer-reviewed manuscripts in some of the finest cardiovascular journals, including Circulation, The American Journal of Cardiology, The American Heart Journal, Haemostasis and Thrombosis and Platelets.  Original investigations conducted by the center have been presented nationally and internationally at some of the most prestigious cardiology meetings including the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology, the European Congress of Cardiology and the International Society for Thrombosis and Haemostasis.  The center is particularly recognized for its studies in antiplatelet drug effects and resistance to antiplatelet drug therapy. This work has elucidated how drugs reduce clotting in the heart and also how some patients may remain at risk despite receiving conventional antiplatelet therapy.

Under the direction of Paul A. Gurbel, M.D., the Sinai Center for Thrombosis Research has amassed one of the largest bodies of data related to platelet inhibition in patients undergoing catheter-based coronary revascularization procedures. Other investigations have studied patients with heart attacks, the leading cause of cardiac death.

Current Investigations

1. Mechanisms of clopidogrel resistance and ADP-receptor signaling
2. Clopidogrel resistance in patients with stent thrombosis
3. Clopidogrel dosing regimens and platelet inhibition
4. Endeavor trial- a study of a new drug-delivery stent designed to reduce the incidence of restenosis
5. The Pfizer trial investigating the role of a new drug that raises HDL. This novel agent may prove to be a major advance in the quest for stabilization and regression of coronary artery plaques
6. Point-of-service devices to rapidly detect the extent of  platelet inhibition and thus provide a risk profile for the particular patient
7. CATCH study- an evaluation of the incidence of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia
